If these stories from people who saw 'The Big Sick' don't get you to a theater, nothing will: By Proma Khosla2017-07-13 14:25:35 UTC There's no one way to describe The Big Sick. It's a love story, a story of family, a story of illness, a story of struggling on the road to success. It's also a true story that happened to writers Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, and as the film prepares for worldwide release, Nanjiani shared some of the heartfelt responses audiences have had to it. A young man of Indian/Pakistani heritage stood up in NY next to his white girlfriend & was choking up so hard he couldn't get words out. — Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) July 12, 2017 I met gay people from my part of the world who aren't out to their parents. I met ppl who were in inter-cultural relationships that ended. — Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) July 12, 2017 I heard ppl in multi-cultural relationships who started a food truck together. I've seen wedding photos with faces from all over the world. — Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) July 12, 2017 I've seen more pics of white people in shalwar kameez's than ever. I've heard from ppl who stopped talking to their familes & started again. — Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) July 12, 2017 The Big Sick doesn't derive much humor from the East-meets-West culture clash, which makes it less of a hurdle than many of the characters would think. Emily met someone who has the same ultra-rare condition as her. It was the first time she'd met something with it. Ppl told hospital stories — Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) July 12, 2017 The biggest plot point of The Big Sick is that Emily (Zoe Kazan) has a rare medical condition and ends up in a medically-induced coma as doctors try to diagnose her. This is shortly after she and Kumail have broken up, and he questions that decision as he remembers their time together and meets her parents. An older Indian couple told me that they now understood their son's choices a little bit better. I didn't how to respond, so I hugged them. — Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) July 12, 2017 Nanjiani's family struggled to accept Gordon and their relationship at first, and in The Big Sick they stop speaking altogether. Luckily, that passed. A lady said she'd listen to her husband's voicemails while he was in the coma he never awoke from. She touched her wedding band as she spoke — Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) July 12, 2017 In the film, after Emily enters a medically induced coma, Kumail listens to old voicemails from her to remember their relationship. A woman of Indian heritage took her 20 yr old daughter to see it at the theater. She thanked us & paid for our breakfast without telling us. — Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) July 12, 2017 I want to thank everyone who came to the movie & felt compelled to share their stories. I will always remember each one. — Kumail Nanjiani (@kumailn) July 12, 2017 The Big Sick is now in theaters.
